State Treasurer correspondence, 1858-1904.

The series contains a sample of the outgoing and incoming correspondence of the State Treasurer. The outgoing correspondence is from 1885 to 1902. It is from Treasurers E.S. Crill (1885-1888), F.J. Pons (1889-1891), E.J. Triay (1892), C.B. Collins (1893-1897), and J.B. Whitfield (1897-1902). The incoming correspondence is from 1858 to 1904. It also includes one letter dated 1847.

Originally of Wayne County, North Carolina, James B. Whitfield came to Florida as a boy, when his father started a cotton plantation in Leon County. He was educated at the West Florida Seminary in Tallahassee and at the University of Virginia, where he received the bachelor of law in 1886.
